D&R projects: what they are and when to use them

Use a separate D&R project for post-install detach, reset, damage, or insurance work while preserving the original install history.

Updated3 min readprojects

D&R is a separate post-install service project. Starting one does not turn the original install into a D&R record or erase its history.

When to use D&R

Use a D&R project when an existing customer's installed system needs a separate detach/reset or damage-related work cycle, for example:

  • Panels must be detached for roof work and reset afterward.
  • A hail or wind event produced suspected or documented system damage.
  • An insurer requested an estimate, supplement, repair record, or completion package.
  • A lender or post-install inspection identified corrective work that belongs outside the original install closeout.

Do not use D&R for a new financed install, an unfinished punch-list item that still belongs to the original project, or an unmatched pre-sale storm lead. Search for the existing customer and project first.

Start from Storm follow-up

Use this path when a storm impact is already linked to the customer.

  1. Open the follow-up queue

In the sidebar, open Storm & Outreach → Storm → Follow-ups, then open the affected customer.

  2. Choose Convert to D&R Project

The action is unavailable after that storm impact has already created a project.

  3. Review the new project

Confirm the project name and optional workflow template. Carrier name and claim number can be entered now or completed later.

  4. Create D&R Project

SunrAI creates a new D&R project, links it to the storm impact, and opens the project workflow when the action succeeds.

Start from an existing install project

Use this path when the original install already exists in SunrAI.

  1. Open the install project

Go to Projects and open the customer's original install.

  2. Click Convert to D&R…

The button appears in the project header when the Storm module is enabled and this install does not already have a linked D&R project.

  3. Add optional claim details

Enter the carrier name or claim number if known. If SunrAI did not manage the original install, you can mark the source as imported/incomplete so partial history does not skew AI or installation reporting.

  4. Spawn D&R project

SunrAI creates the linked project and takes you to it. The original project remains unchanged.

If no original install exists in SunrAI, an authorized user can also create a standalone D&R project from the normal New Project form.

What SunrAI creates

  • A new project for the same customer, starting at Not Started.
  • A link between the original install and its D&R project when conversion began from project detail. Each page shows the related lifecycle.
  • D&R phases and tasks from the team's D&R project template when one resolves successfully. If no workflow is applied, SunrAI warns you so you can apply a template from the new project.
  • An insurance-claim record when carrier or claim details are supplied during creation; the rest can be completed from the D&R project's insurance tools.
  • A completed conversion link on the storm impact when the project began in Storm follow-up.

The original install's phases, tasks, notes, documents, status, and history stay on the original record. SunrAI also prevents a second active D&R project from being spawned from the same source install.

Troubleshooting

"Convert to D&R… is missing" — Confirm the Storm module is enabled, the current project is an install rather than D&R, and no linked D&R project already exists. Look for the linked-lifecycle card near the top of the project.

"The D&R project has no phases or tasks" — The project can still be created when template application fails. Apply the team's D&R project template from the new project and report the warning shown during creation.

"The claim fields are empty" — Carrier and claim number are optional during creation. Add them later from the D&R project's insurance tools.

"I started from the wrong customer" — Stop before adding more work. The conversion uses the selected customer's existing record; it does not merge duplicate customers automatically.
